Back2Base

We are excited to share our newest collab with a gym in Uithoorn that embraces the heritage of combat sports in the Netherlands. Back2Base is a welcoming gym for all that focuses on striking arts. Back2Base welcomes the fact that the modern ‘Dutch Kickboxing style’ originated from Kyokushin karate.

Back2Base is a gym that focuses on implementing the traditional mindset and techniques of classic martial arts such as Kyokushin karate but adjusting them accordingly to fit the modern striking arts . Which seems fitting as the Dutch Kickboxing style evolved out of the Karate styles. Back2Base teaches at all levels and encourages different students to train with each other, being able to train with different levels is an important skill. Aside from teaching traditional techniques, they also strive to uphold the tradition of respect in their dojo. Respect the instructors, the dojo and each other.

For Back2Base we designed performance shirts for their competition team. For the design elements we used the brushstroke style of ancient Japanese calligraphy to highlight their roots to tradition. One of the quotes that the competition often uses come from the Spartan war cry that basically says “Come and get them.” We placed this war-cry on the back with a spartan shield symbol drawn in the same brushstroke style. On the arm we added another one of those brushstrokes as a design element with the Back2Base logo on it.

On the front of the shirt we have chosen to use embroidery to add the classic Kyokushin symbol that can always be found on the heart of karate gi’s. This symbol stands for a certain philosophy, one that they feel connected to. You can also find this symbol hanging on a banner in their gym. To show this connection we have chosen to use embroidery for this symbol in the design to mimic those classic karate gi’s.

The color that was chosen for the performance shirts was an almost neon red, we wanted the shirts to pop. In the same ideology of the Spartan war-cry we wanted the color to tell people that they have arrived and are ready for a fight.

The design was based on implementing traditional elements into a modern shirt. Look out for the competition team kicking ass, in style.

Go check out Back2Base in Uithoorn if you are looking to level-up your striking game!
